Moutere Hills Vineyard..
...is a truly boutique-size winery situated amongst the picturesque hills near Nelson in the warm and sunny North of New Zealand's south island.
John and Ali Tocker have owned the vineyard since 2005 and have been steadily investing in the business to make it a leading winery in Nelson and New Zealand.
Our vineyards benefit from the moderating effect of the Tasman Bay to our north and are protected from severe weather by the surrounding Arthur and Richmond ranges. The Moutere Hills vineyard is also special in that most of our vines have been planted (1993) on their own roots, which we believe gives our wines a purer expression of the variety. The Moutere Hills team are further working towards converting the vineyard to organic farming practises.
The vines are on the Moutere clay gravels, which give the wines a lovely fruit density, minerality and fine tannin. The nature of these soils also allows us to avoid irrigating our vines.
The Nelson area is one of New Zealand's sunniest regions and clear skies allow for very cool nights, which results in an expressive flavour development in the fruit and a solid structure of fruit acid.
This unique combination of soil, climate and vines, together with our meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard as well as in the winery, produces wonderfully textured wines that are not overly fruity, have an elegant minerality and are long-lived.
After a fire destroyed the winery in 2006 we have rebuild a state of the art winery in which we believe we will be able to raise the bar even further in terms of quality. A new café and cellar door have also been rebuilt and this is once again hugely popular with locals and well as tourist.
