The 12ha property comprises of two vineyards; one on the north facing hill block and the other on the lower home block. The first vines were planted in 1993 and the most recent in 2013.
The vineyards benefit from a unique micro climate in the Sunrise Valley, often 2 deg or more warmer than Nelson city area.
The vines are grown on Moutere clay gravels, which give the wines a lovely fruit density, minerality and fine tannin. The moisture holding ability of these soils also removes the necessity for irrigation. The Nelson area is one of New Zealand's sunniest regions, boasting over 2800 hours annually. Clear skies and cool nights result with expressive flavour development in the fruit and a solid structure of fruit acid.
The total planted area is 3.63ha (8.97 acres). Varietals include Syrah, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Viognier, Chenin Blanc and Merlot. The Rose is made from grapes sourced from the alluvial Waimea plains and the Sauvignon Blanc from grapes grown on Moutere clays 7kms away.
We offer a contract winemaking service for the smaller boutique producers. The wines are crafted by our legendary winemaker Patrick Stowe.
Our approach is intensive, hands-on wine making with a “non-interference” ethic. The small scale of the operation allows for critical quality control at Harvest, resulting in absolutely clean fruit. Using small half-ton fermenters and with constant vigilance we are able to step back and let the wine evolve on its own, without our interference. “Non-interference winemaking” is not a euphemism for being lax, it’s an ethos, a tightrope balancing act which when executed correctly allows the wine to develop the unique identity that we constantly strive for.
As a result of our minimal handling approach and our comittment to achieving full flavoured wines with longetivity, tartrates (often referred to as wine diamonds) can often be found in our bottled wine.
